- @knightsbridge@infosec.exchangeNationwide Blackout in Ecuador Ecuador experienced a nationwide electrical blackout Wednesday due to a failure in an energy transmission line that led to cascading failures. The cascading issues caused some water purification plants and pumps to fail, hospitals that did not have generators to go offline, subway systems to fail, and more. By Wednesday night, energy had been restored to most of the country. “The outages we had today were due to a lack of investment in maintenance, new electrical transmission, and the protection of the electrical transmission infrastructure,” Public Infrastructure Minister Roberto Luque told media on Wednesday evening. Mayor of Quito Pabel Muñoz described the incident as "major", saying that, "it even knocked out power to the metro, which has its own separate system." The Quito metro said that services were interrupted "due to a general failure of the national interconnected electrical energy system.”
